My 10 Favorite Stores for Fabric!
Hey Homebody! Here is a list of 10 stores (online and in-store) that are my go-to places for all my sewing needs. These range from fabric to trims to feathers. Enjoy and share your favorites with me.
Fabric Wholesale Direct: FWD is my number one place to shop because they are so affordable and their power mesh is the best power mesh I have ever used. It’s so soft to the touch, it’s only $3.99 per yard, and the range of colors is perfect. I suggest the power mesh for feather robes. I know I just went on a full review of the power mesh, but I stand by so many other types of fabric from FWD, in my opinion they are great from your basics like jersey, muslin, ITY knits, and more. My first purchase with FWD was in 2018 and I needed fabric for a holiday party dress, I picked up five yards of their neoprene and the quality sold me instantly. The customer service is also something to rave about because they are very responsive. They are willing to send out replacements if they may have messed up your order. The only con I have is that if you order fabric and find yourself needing more for your project your additional fabric may not match original. I’m assuming its a different batch and that plays a part in the color difference but like I stated they are great with working with you to correct the issue if they can.
Spandex World: Spandex World is great for spandex, of course! Spandex World has a wide range of printed spandex and what I would consider specialty stretch fabrics. The pricing on Spandex World is affordable but not the lowest you can find. I started off using Spandex World back when I was only confident using stretch fabric (which has only changed slightly) and I was a college student with limited funds. I’ve been using Spandex World faithfully since then, the customer service is good they are based in NYC and it could be because I have a slight obsession with New Yorkers that makes me bias but I had a great experience when I had to reach out because of issues with my payment method. I recently tried their faux leather which is definitely my new favorite item from Spandex World.
Mood Fabrics: Mood Fabrics is the place to go for affordable fabric and designer fabrics, their inventory is huge you could literally get lost on the website for hours. At the start of my sewing journey I had no clue where to purchase fabrics or even how to identify the types of fabric by name (which is still a struggle) and somewhere in that time I found Mood Fabrics. I had no clue how to utilize this resource, again a was a college student with limited funds, so I used it once and never went back until now and I’m obsessed and as soon as they started shipping out again during this quarantine they have been getting all my money. The quality is very good and the pricing is actually affordable depending on what you’re looking for.
Oak Fabrics: Oak Fabrics is actually new to me, I learned about them from watching a fabric haul on Youtube. I’ve just placed and order with them for mainly plaid/flannel fabrics and denim so I’ll give my input on the quality in a later blog post and youtube video but I have high hopes. They have a nice range of items and super cute printed fabrics that I’m excited to order in the future, they also have a few patterns that I’m eyeing as well.
Joann Fabric: Joann Fabric is a classic and a staple in my life. I’m sure all designers are aware of Joann’s even if it’s not a place you shop at, but Joann’s is good for people like me who aren’t lucky enough to live in a state that has a large fabric district. Joann’s is great for patterns because of their $1.99 pattern sales, I’m not embarrassed to say that I go OVERBOARD and buy the maximum amount and sometimes travel to other locations to get the patterns that the first location didn’t have (let’s not judge, I’m sensitive). I feel like Joann’s has stepped their game up with their fabric range and quality and I have found some great fabric in the recent years. If you’ve never shopped at Joann’s take my advice (and everybody else that shops there on a regular) don’t you dare pay full price for anything, there’s always a coupon.
Corsetmakingsupplies.com: This list isn’t in any particular order but if it was this would definitely be at the top of the list. Corset Making Supplies is relatively new to me but I have purchased from them so many times. I’ve stated a few times now that I have a lingerie line that I have just recently introduced and I discovered Corset Making Supplies while working on a fashion show. I wasn’t even sure of the website because I had never heard of anyone using them so I made a small purchase to see how I liked the quality and to see if I would actually get the package (you never know these days). The quality of the underwire, grommets, and boning is great and they are very affordable. The customer service is great I had an issue with forgotten items in an order and I was shipped out the missing items without any hassle and I have been singing their praises since (I’m a sucker for great customer service). If you’re into bra making, corset making, hat making, leather crafts, and a few others please check out Corset Making Supplies they won’t disappoint
Pacific Trimmings: I’ve known about Pacific Trimming for awhile but I had never shopped with them, but now I use them for trim and elastic. They definitely have a wide range of colors and types of elastic. Their prices are pretty affordable, the only thing I can say is that it can be hard to be sure that the color online will be the exact color that you need but besides that I enjoy shopping with them. Pacific Trimming is at the top of my list of places to visit whenever I make it back to NYC.
Feather Boa Shop: One of my signature items is my feather robes (which I will discuss in a future blog post) and Feather Boa Shop has become my go to place to buy bulk feathers. I usually purchase feather boas by the dozen and they are good at providing at a good price. They could improve on the range of colors available in each category (lightweight, plush, and jumbo) but they are good for what I use them for.
The Feather Place: The Feather Place is the first feather website I came across when I begin making robes and they are my favorite because they have a wide range of colors, weights, and types of boas and feathers. The Feather Place is at a higher price point than Feather Boa Shop but if you’re willing to spend more for variety they are definitely worth it.
Tulle Shop: Tulle Shop should be at the top of your list if you create prom dresses, costumes, or any item that requires tulle. You can get a 54 inch by 40 yards bolt of tulle for less than $10. The shipping cost can add up but for the price of the bolt it is worth it, because compared to purchasing full price or even discounted in store you end up saving.
What are your go to places to shop for fabric and notions? Do you shop at any of my favorites? What were your experinces?
